Ready, Go Shoot

Today I thought I would discuss the three things to consider before going to a photoshoot for a headshot.

1- Do you have a Signature piece of clothing,  jewelry,  stylish glasses, hat or color that people always compliment you on?

This is one question I always ask my clients when creating their signature style to be portrayed through a headshot.

Some people don’t realize they have one, so we identify it together.

For example  one of my clients  loves  vintage hats and always gets compliments but had not had a professional headshot done. We did one and it was a hit, it shows off her quirky and unique personality and it is her signature style that people can identify right away.

2- How do you want people to perceive you? The advice that I give to a client in the financial sector will be different than the advice I give to a client that is going to open her art gallery.

Both clients need to get a headshot done for publicity, social media and print and one of the reasons they come to me is to prepare for that shoot. You want to seem approachable and trustworthy.

3- What is the goal of your headshot? Who do you want to appeal to? If the goal is to get more speaking engagements and your signature speech is about authenticity in the workplace, you might be able to throw in a signature necklace, color or eye glasses that really set you apart as authentic along with your business suit. You want to be memorable and communicate who you really are.

Confidence is really the key and the best accessory that you can bring to any photoshoot.

Some of the things we work on with my clients are the poses, facial expressions and clothing because it all comes together as a signature style. I even give them phrases to repeat to feel confident so that their true personality shines.

3 Mistakes Women Make When Dressing Their Age

Today I wanted to discuss 3 mistakes women make when trying to dress their age.

We have the ability to show the world who we are, our personality and all the amazing things we have to contribute.

All this from our fashion sense and the confidence that being well dressed gives us.

Why deprive ourselves of this privilege?

Perception is reality and we can alter people’s perception with our clothing.

Studies have shown that people who are considered better dressed get better jobs, higher paying salaries and are overall treated better.

Our clothes, grooming and appearance is an extension of our personality.

People will judge, it’s human nature. They always have and always will. But we should embrace the fact and use it to our advantage.

We are in control of our image

These are some of the question I work on with my clients;

  • What do you want to say with your clothing?
  • Are you representing your true self?
  • Are you sure that what you are presenting to others is perceived correctly?
  • Can there be a disconnect?

We also go over 3 questions that I help them ask themselves to avoid any fashion faux-pas.

  1. When is the last time you changed your hair – makeup – glasses and wardrobe style?

What you wore 10 or 20 years ago may have made you look amazing, however, fashion styles have changed, your body has changed and so has your lifestyle.

You may have been dressing for clubs and pubs and now you are dressing more for the garden club and PTA

2) Have you considered investing in new undergarments?

You may be wearing the same brand or size that you were wearing 20 years ago but our bodies age and with gravity, quality support is really important.

A bra fitting at least once a year is essential. You will find that most dept. stores provide a free service

Have you considered shape wear? With technology, Shape wear has come a long way. The trick is to try a lot of different brands until you find the one that suits your body and needs.

3) Third

What do you want to accentuate?

What do you want to conceal?

We always want to show our best assets, as we should. If you have beautiful legs or arms, whatever your age, show them off.

Asking your best friend, a saleslady on commission or your mom for advice is not always the best idea. They all look through a different lens that’s why my clients come to me.

As we get older, we also need to invest in quality garments, that have structure with better fabrics, often more expensive. We can no longer just throw on that little flimsy cotton dress and hope for the best.

The way we feel in our clothes and move through life impacts all aspects of our life, the careers we seek, the mates we seek, the friendships.

The adventures and the life we live and how people feel about you

If you think it’s ok to go through life being average, that’s fine

However, I guarantee there will come a time when you will regret not making the effort.

We all have something in common, we want to be acknowledged, liked, have a sense of belonging and getting compliments doesn’t hurt.

I hope these tips have helped you today

Your Boots are Made for Walking

It’s definitely boot season and boot weather

What is most important to you when purchasing a pair of boots?

When shopping with my clients, this is something I walk them through.

A few things to consider;

= What style best suits your wardrobe?

Are you classic or casual? Will you be wearing them with tucked in jeans or dresses? The heel you choose will give the boot its formality and functionality. For instance, one of my clients has a very traditional style but casual, so she chose riding boots.

= What quality do you want to purchase?

Some of my clients find that synthetic is not always comfortable for their legs and feet. They prefer either leather or suede which is more flexible and breathable.

If you are very casual and out and about all day like one of my realtor clients, she opted for a waterproof leather which suits her needs perfectly.

= What price range can you afford?

We can’t always buy several pairs of boots. You may be sending your son off to college or having to buy a new car. We need to shop wisely

If you want leather boots, pre-shop for them, you can find good buys late fall.

= What color suits your wardrobe best, black, brown, print or color?

This will depend on the foundation of your wardrobe

If you have few pairs of boots, classic is always best. The more classic the item, the longer it lasts.

I know we are often tempted by the snakeskin or leopard print but it’s not always versatile.

In all cases, the boot needs to be snug and fit perfectly. We were discussing this recently with one of my clients who’s priority was comfort so her ankle was not held properly in the boot and it was loose. This caused her to fall, fortunately her boots did not have a heel so only damage done was to her ego. We always feel silly.

Frosting on the Cake

Accessorizing is the cheapest way to extend your wardrobe and the final touch to your ensemble, the frosting on the Cake!

For those who do not know me, I am Anna Mc Connell, Transformational Coach and Wardrobe Stylist, I help women and Transwomen with their style and image. I help them create a wardrobe that fits their lifestyle, personality and of course budget.

What questions should you be asking yourself when choosing your frosting?

Something I walk my clients through is my H20 Method.

= What do you want to conceal

= What do you want to highlight

= So that you get an OOOOOOOO ! The H2O effect.

We can easily detract from the troubled spots with our jewelry, for instance, a bright and bold necklace will draw the eyes upward and away from your midsection

A beautiful cuff and a 3/4 sleeve is the best way to make your arms appear long and lean.

To highlight your best features, chandelier earrings will show off your neckline.

Or a statement necklace will highlight your décolleté.

There are many ways to use accessories to your advantage. Using jewelry, scarves, even bags or shoes strategically will make you appear slimmer, taller or larger. We should not underestimate their power.

The next step is to get my guide while I am still giving it away free.

Even if you don’t want the guide, you want to be on my email list for special invitations that I don’t announce publicly.

Fashion Myths Debunked

Fashion is like art, very subjective.

Not everyone is going to like the same thing.

Nor is everyone going to wear it the same way

Obviously, Fashion evolves and changes over the years.

What was considered fashionable or appropriate years ago, will seem old or outdated today.

Fashion comes and goes with a set of rules that are generally guidelines for the visual aspect and pleasing effect.

There are also a lot of myths.

Such as…

This is untrue – It’s not about being tall, it’s about the visual proportions and fit.

For instance…

A client I worked with was petite and hired me to shop her closet. We found a dress that her sister had bought her almost a decade ago.

She had never worn it thinking it looked baggy and too long for her.

But because it was so well made and from a popular designer she hadn’t had the heart to toss it.

In a few minutes, I was able to add a belt, jewelry and a pair of high heeled boots that she wore with tights.

It immediately looked tailored and fitted to her proportions.

She ended up wearing it to brunch with her sister that weekend

She sent me the nicest email saying her sister gave her compliments all day and even the gentleman at the next table asked for her number.

A petite woman can absolutely wear long dresses if the fit and style suits her body type. When doing so, don’t hesitate to show some skin, go sleeveless, off the shoulder or a scoop neck. You will look amazing.

Fashion does not need to be something for runway models.

With your favorite French Aunt who knows how to enhance the positives and eliminate the negatives using what you already have in your closet, it’s easy and fun!

4 Mistakes To Avoid When Dressing Comfortably for Holiday Get Togethers

Most of us are getting ready for Holiday get togethers with friends and family.

We want to feel comfortable in our clothes and feel good about our bodies. We also want to be photo ready.

I remember working with a client who was leaving for a family reunion that was going to last a week. The entire family was coming from all over the States. Cousins she had not seen for years. She had put on some weight and you know how it is, you know the reunion is coming up and you have diligently put on your schedule Must exercise but it never happens. She was working long hours and long days and the time came when she was in a panic mode, extra pounds and nothing to wear that fit properly.

After shopping together, we were able to find pieces who not only made her look amazing but feel amazing. She told me she had gotten a ton of compliments from her family members.

When you  wear the right clothes for your body type and feel good about yourself your attitude and confidence changes altogether.

So let’s talk about the 4 mistakes to avoid when dressing comfortably for holiday get togethers

  • Avoid wearing something new, the obvious one is new shoes of course, I have been there. You buy the shoes for your new outfit and don’t have time to break them in. You wear them 3 hours and limp for three days, it never works.

Or the new blouse and you didn’t realize that the V-neck was too low Speaking of uncomfortable – Make sure to try everything on beforehand.

  • Not taking into consideration all the activities

You are at your sister in laws house wearing a bell sleeve top and she hires you to help in the kitchen making the mashed potatoes. Bell sleeves are just not practical in this instance.

Or you are dressed for dinner but they decide to go bowling that afternoon. Ask your host about the activities,  you do not want to be caught off guard.

  • Not wearing the right undergarments

You always need the right support and shape wear. The perfect fit would be no pulling, tugging or squeezing. I used to think shape wear had to be super tight and uncomfortable to be efficient.

That is not true, too tight actually never works so I always suggest to go up a size. It still maintains everything in place and it is comfortable.

Keep in mind, Not all shape wear brands are equal in quality and comfort so do try them on before purchasing.

  • Dress in layers

I have been living in Kansas City for 15 years and the temperature can change from morning to afternoon so dressing in layers has become a habit. It reminds me of going to visit my grandmother, she was always cold. She would already be wearing 3 sweaters and had the heat turned up to the maximum. 10 minutes in her apartment and you would be sleeveless. Being too hot or too cold is really uncomfortable.

I hope these tips have helped.

Fashion Hacks to Aging

When we think about looking younger, we immediately think of anti-aging creams, moisturizers and scrubs, but there are a lot of things we can do fashion wise to look younger and on trend without looking like our teenage daughters.

We don’t want to look like we are trying too hard.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Opt for more tailored and structured clothing.
  • Choose garments with quality fabrics, cottons, wools, silk and heavy jerseys.
  • I avoid anything clingy or wrinkly, it only looks cheap.

2. wearing an “All retro Outfit”

Some of us love to shop vintage, I myself love vintage jewelry.

I was discussing this with a friend not long ago while visiting a retro boutique.

The best way to wear vintage is to sprinkle in one piece or one accessory at a time and keep the rest of the outfit modern and fresh.

We don’t want to look like we just walked out of a time capsule

Thirdly, avoid wearing brand logos that our teens would wear we are not walking billboards.

Instead choose items that show your personality, style and uniqueness
and lastly, with age, our skin becomes paler.

So to highlight your features, wear brighter colors and accessories near your face to give it a glow.

Remember you can turn heads at any age.

The Fall Boot Trends

I don’t know about you but after the heat of this summer, I long for some cooler Fall days. I can’t wait to wear my cozy sweaters, my shawls and leather boots! If we can have a beautiful autumn, I wouldn’t mind a change of wardrobe. Leather boots immediately elevate your outfit whether you are wearing them with slim jeans or a dress. You will find hereunder the Fall Boot trends.

The best time to purchase your boots is November.  There are plenty of promotions from Black Friday to Christmas Specials. When buying your boots, think long term classic instead of the Trend of the Moment. I know it’s tempting but if you decide to purchase the Fall trend, don’t invest too much money into it. It may pass as quickly as it has come.

Why do women love accessories so much? One reason may be that they have nothing to do with size. An amazing boot, shoe or bag looks Fabulous on anyone. The right accessory will transform your outfit.

The switch of a heel to a flat, a slouchy bag to a clutch can change the entire mood of the outfit. Accessories are an easy way to add personality to your outfit and extend your wardrobe.

Why do we love our boots? Whether classic or trendy, this full coverage footwear is comfy and chic.
Once I start wearing them, I cannot take them off. They can have a country look, an equestrian vibe or a sleek urban chic flair. They give us the comfort to wear dresses and skirts on chillier days. They will dress up our jeans or dress down our most delicate pieces.

Boots give more versatility to our wardrobe and more options. Every woman should have a few pairs in different styles.

The right pair will completely transform your style. They will be an important part of your outfit so choose what you wear wisely. Boots are available today at many prices from 50 to 500$ in our average stores. They are definitely more expensive than shoes but well worth the investment.

The Knee High Boot

They will allow you to wear your lighter fabric dresses and skirts in the fall and winter when it is cold. It will give a modern twist to a flouncy skirt and shawl sweater.
At the change of season, stuff them and store them in an appropriate box with a photo of the boots taped to the box. The High heel boot is just as lady like as a pump. When wearing a boot with a dress or skirt, make sure there is not more than 1/2 an inch space between the leg and the boot. It should not be too tight either. With a full skirt, the hem should fall just over the top of the boot.

Heavier Heeled styles (Western)

These are best with longer skirts. Don’t pair your lacy, tiered skirts with rugged boots. Keep this style for your jeans or more casual skirts. The Fall boot trends -the western boot

Flat or Equestrian Boot

These are fun to dress down an outfit. Opt for interesting textures and colors for a youthful lookThe Fall Boot Trends- Flat or Equestrian Boot

The Ankle Boot

The ankle boots are very elegant and ultramodern. You can find them in all styles, textures and colors. They are easy to wear under your pants. I am not a fan of wearing ankle boots with dresses unless they are very slim and you wear tights the same color as the boot to elongate your leg and avoid cutting it off.

“An Accessory Is Just As Important As The Outfit. It Completes The Look, Highlighting The Personality Of The Wearer” Giorgio ArmaniThe Fall Boot Trends- The ankle boot

You may remember the days when “Matchy-Matchy” was the norm. This is no longer the case. We have become much more creative with our choices.

Mix Textures

A patent boot with a patent bag is way too much shine. Pair a high gloss boot or shoe with a velvet or brocade bag for more interest.

Mix Prints & Solids

Balance the busy and basic. It doesn’t mean you have to stay away from color. A leopard print and a bright red is very chic.

Mix Metallics and Matte

Pair a sleek silver with black and a gold will be a great complement to brown.
Always stay in the same mood or style of the outfit.

An equestrian boot calls for a hobo bag
A sleek clutch , a sexy stiletto
A dainty purse, a lady like pump
And pair your sporty nylon messenger bag with your favorite sneakers.

What boot will you be wearing this winter?

Exercise Is Beneficial To Your Skin

Exercise is beneficial to your skin

You already know that exercise is good for your body but did you know exercise is beneficial to your skin? That’s right: Provided that you stay hydrated and, always wear sunscreen, a regular workout can do wonders on your complexion. “We tend to focus on the cardiovascular benefits of physical activity, and those are important. But anything that promotes healthy circulation also helps keep your skin healthy and vibrant,” says dermatologist Ellen Marmur, MD, author of Simple Skin . Here are three ways exercise makes skin more radiant and healthy-looking:

1. Exercise cleanses your skin from the inside out

A good, sweaty workout gets your heart pumping, which boosts circulation and blood flow. That, in turn, nourishes skin cells. Plus, the increased blood flow delivers reparative nutrients to your skin and increases collagen production. Improved circulation aids in the removal of cellular debris, free radicals and toxins.

2. Exercise helps clear clogged pores

Sweat and heat open your pores, making it easier to expel debris like dirt and oil, kind of like getting your face steamed during a facial. Just be sure to remove your makeup  before working out and wash your face immediately afterward to keep that pore-clogging gunk from sinking right back in.

3. Exercise helps you de-stress and sleep better

When you are tired and stressed, your face reflects it. That might mean waking up with dark undereye circles or puffiness, dull skin or acne breakouts. Regular exercise can lower your levels of the “stress hormone” Cortisol. Studies show that regular exercise can also ease insomnia.  So you may finally start waking up with the great skin you’ve always dreamed about.
With a consistent workout regimen and a consistent skincare Regimen your skin will look better than ever. Best of all, with both skincare and exercise, it’s never too late to start!
